Join us above the falls! Showy N Minneapolis trailside planting Oct. 8

Long an industrial zone with little community access, the north and northeast Minneapolis riverfront is undergoing a much-needed transformation. After years of local advocacy and planning work, FMR is proud to host two hands-on fall events within a new portion of the Above the Falls Regional Park. The September 10 event at Sheridan Memorial raingarden (pictured above) was full to capacity and went very well! But there's still space to join us October 8 to plant a showy trail-side prairie at Ole Olsen.

Both events are part of FMR's Above the Falls stewardship program — providing opportunities for education, access and hands-on restoration along the banks of the Mississippi River north of St. Anthony Falls — and we'll be sure to stay in touch with participants about future events at these and other north and northeast Minneapolis sites as well.

Raingarden Tending
Sheridan Memorial — Above the Falls Regional Park
Northeast Minneapolis
Thursday, September 10, 6-8 p.m.

In addition to being the city's newest park, Sheridan Memorial is the first to be named for the local Sheridan community and was the result of a long-term effort to declare a local veterans park. Last spring, FMR volunteers installed a large raingarden to beautify the park, provide bee, butterfly and bird habitat, and reduce the amount of polluted runoff flowing from the nearby parking lot and local streets into the Mississippi River. Volunteers worked with FMR Ecologist Alex Roth and Stewardship Coordinator Adam Flett to help maintain the relatively young planting by weeding out invasive species and assisting with other tending tasks, including replanting, as needed.

Showy Demonstration Prairie Planting
Ole Olsen — Above the Falls Regional Park, North Minneapolis
Thursday, October 8, 5:30-7:30 p.m.

This inaugural event has been years in the making. For over a decade, FMR has helped engage community members and advocate for a revitalized north and northeast Minneapolis riverfront with improved access, habitat and community-positive development. Join us at our newest restoration and volunteer stewardship site as we plant a demonstration prairie with bright wildflowers that are both pleasing on the eyes and excellent pollinator habitat.
